This document will go over the new things in SpeedDial 2.2 for those already familiar with SpeedDial 2.1. If you are new to SpeedDial altogether, please read the Read Me file instead.
SpeedDial should now be A LOT more friendly with other programs that want to use the modem while SpeedDial is open. The way SpeedDial handles the modem has been more or less changed entirely.
SpeedDial still can't "see" the internal modem in newer-model PowerBook G3s. Sorry.
Dialing through the speakers works again. Due to a nuance (if that's the right word) in the way REALbasic builds programs, the sound resources SpeedDial needed were missing. They're back in in this version.
Various cosmetic cleaning has been done, and Balloon Help has been added to menus that didn't have it before.
The Command Lines window is gone. Forever. I hope nobody out there was seriously using it...
But there are some neat new features. SpeedDial can now automatically sort your list of entries in any group alphabetically when you change the name of one of the entries. If you think this is slowing down your computer too much, you can deactivate it in the new Preferences window (see below) and sort it whenever you want by selecting Sort List (Command-L) from the Edit menu.
Also, when you start to type a name into the listbox, SpeedDial will jump to that entry. For example, if you type "j", SpeedDial will find the first entry that starts with "j"... let's say it's Jack. Then if you type "o", SpeedDial will look through the list for an entry that starts with "jo", and it might find Joanne. Then if you type "s", it will look for "jos" and find Joseph. Type "r", and SpeedDial will look for "josr" If it doesn't find a name that begins with "josr", it will look for the first name that begins with "r" and maybe find "Randy" Get the idea? Capitalization doesn't matter. This will make it easier to sort through a group with a lot of entries. (This feature only works if you have the automatic alphabetical sorting mentioned above activated.)
To activate or deactivate these new features, check out the new Preferences window. Select Preferences... from the Options menu to bring it up. There you'll see another new feature: SpeedDial can send a command line of your choosing to the modem before and after it tells the modem to dial the number. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, DON'T GOOF WITH THESE. You probably can't do any physical damage to your modem or computer, but you could confuse it and make it act stubborn to any program that want to use it.
